Why Yoga?
Regardless of your age, physical challenges, or flexibility, Yoga offers the tools to begin,
maintain and increase your physical well being, allowing you to achieve results on and off the
golf course. Yoga allows you to enhance your golf performance for both body and mind.
What to Expect
The practice of yoga incorporates flexibility, strength, balance, core conditioning, and breathing
awareness, teaching focus, relaxation and visualization techniques. The postures presented in this
yoga program are picked to meet the needs of the golfer. Relaxation techniques are used to quiet
the overactive mind and teach visualization tools, essential for golf performance.
Improved flexibility and strength. Practicing yoga dramatically increases flexibility, enabling the
body to move more easily through a full range of motion. Many golfers ask it they can build strength
by practicing yoga. The answer is Yes!
Enhanced Breath Awareness. The physiological effect of holding the breath is a loss of blood
flow to the extremities, including the brain. Any stress we experience on the golf coursefirst
shot, tight lie, or any shot that creates anxietycan cause the body to respond with holding
the breath or hyperventilation (rapid, shallow, uncontrollable breathing). Yoga incorporates
continuous deep, diaphragmatic breathing, allowing the process to become intuitive. The breath has a
direct effect o relieving tension in the golf swing and improves rhythm and temporeducing the
number-one reason for swing flaws.
Quieter Mind. Moving the mind into a "zonelike" meditative state while maintaining full
awareness is the purpose of yoga. A quiet mind is open to subliminal and conscious suggestions.
Practicing visualization techniques will create the power to manifest your intention and your
desired golf outcome into reality. Developing a quieter mind will increase concentration and
visualization capabilities.
Improved Overall Fitness. Strength, flexibility, balance, core strength, and cardiovascular
endurance are components of sound physical fitness. Yoga provides a comprehensive approach to all
these facets of fitness. Developing strength will provide additional, consistent power in your swing.
A healthy, fit body is less prone to injury. A body in pain does not swing a golf club with freedom.
Increased Sense of Balance. Golf is often referred to as a "one-sided sport." By holding yoga poses
on the restricted or less-flexible parts of the body, we begin to bring more balance to the overused
parts of the body. Balance affects spinal movement in the swing, club control, and weight distribution.
Yoga’s Golf Benefits
The specially selected yoga postures for this yoga program for golfers will have specific benefits
for the participant’s golf game. The postures will affect the golfer’s body as follows:
- Neck, traps and upper shoulder yoga postures release tension in the neck and shoulder area, allowing
the golfer to maintain a steady head position with comfort and ease.
- Hand and wrist yoga postures increase strength and traction in the joints reducing pain and limitation
due to repeat task strain and the onset of arthritis. It allows the golfer to maintain club control
throughout the entire swing. This is your only connection to the club.
- Shoulder and upper-back yoga postures relieve shoulder and back pain caused by tension and a sedentary
lifestyle. These postures support correct posture, increase shoulder turn, reduces the risk of
rotator-cuff injury, and supports club control at the top of the swing.
- Yoga postures for the lower back muscles help maintain correct posture, reduces fatigue, and relieves
lower back pain. These postures increase blood flow to the muscles and spine, increasing the range of
motion and power in the golf swing. They also support a consistent spine angel and repeatable swing
pattern.
- Core conditioning yoga postures help develop a strong center which supports a healthy open spine,
reduces the onset of back pain and supports the internal organs. These core strengthening postures
support control of the golf swing and generates power by increasing the X factor through increased
range of motion and rotation of the torso.
- Yoga postures for the hip flexor and psoas muscles decreases lower back pain and allows for greater
power and extension in the finish position of the swing and allows the glutes to engage, generating
more power, club head speed, and distance off the tee.
- Quadriceps and hamstring yoga postures create strength and flexibility in the legs. You will feel
greater ease of movement and support in you back and knees. Strong flexible legs support the body’s
ability to maintain a strong foundation and balance and supports proper knee flexion at address.
- Yoga postures that address the knee, calf and foot relieve pain in the ankles and plantar fascia
areas. They increase stability and balance, and a sense of being grounded to the earth. Effects
push-off power and weight distribution in the finish position. Supports balance and endurance when
walking the course.
Why a Yoga Practice?
Golf is generally viewed as a game of technical skill rather than an athletic event, requiring less
exertion than most other sports. Unfortunately, this common misperception all too often results in
injury and/or premature performance plateaus. The reason is very simple: golf is a highly athletic
event! Recurring pain in the back, shoulders, knee, wrist, and elbow is much too common among
golfers. By following a carefully designed yoga program for golfers, the risk of injury can be
reduced. Additionally, a golfer already suffering from an injury will have much greater success
returning to the game if his/her program addresses the underlying cause to the problem.
